All Star Planet

Jennifer is one of the hosts of All Star Planet, a singing competition for kids 7-14, that benefits charities. It's like American Idol for kids, but you don't have to wait in a long line to sing in front of someone like Simon - you just upload a video of you performing one of the songs on the list. If you're not a singer, or not the right age, you can still vote for your favorites at AllStarPlanet.com. Five finalists will be chosen by fan votes each week, for ten weeks. Then judges will pick five winners, and fans will select two. Each winner gets to pick a charity to benefit. See the web site for all the details, and look for Jennifer's reports and interview clips there as well.

Enough Weather Already!

You may recall that we originally planned our trip route so that we could avoid cold weather, and especially snow. Well, within a 24-hour period we had enough extreme weather to last us the rest of the year! After Saturday night's severe thunderstorms, we had a break for our broadcast on Sunday, then actually saw the sun briefly as we headed for Asheville and the Biltmore Estate. Then we heard on the radio that there was a tornado warning, and Vic spent a good portion of the drive scanning the horizon for funnel clouds. By the time we reached Asheville, it was winter again, with a few snow flurries. Since we didn't leave there till it was nearly dark, we ended up driving through a snowstorm. We even saw accumulation on the sides of the road as we headed into the mountains. Max was not a happy camper, especially after passing an accident on the dark and slippery highway. We made it to Tennessee safe and sound, and look forward to a possibly chilly day at Dollywood...

April 15, 2007

From Thunder Road to Thunderstorms

We're broadcasting live from Paramount's Carowinds theme park on the border between North and South Carolina. Join us at LifeStyleTalkRadio.com from 9am-noon Eastern today as we talk about our experiences in the Carolinas over the last week. We'll also have a our review of Meet the Robinsons in Disney Digital 3D, some news from Apple and a look at what else is going on in the world of tech...

Universally Speaking

We enjoy going to Universal Studios in Hollywood, but now we know just how cool its Florida counterparts are... Not just one park, but two. Islands of Adventure rocks! Max got to ride the Hulk while Jen and Vic spent the rest of the day soaking wet after two water rides back to back. Not just any water rides, the most soakful ones we've ever been on. Too bad it wasn't the middle of the summer... Brrr! And of course we had to break our "no chain restaurants for dinner" rule (again), to pay homage to Bubba Gumps in Universal City Walk...

March 18, 2007

We Met Spongebob!

March 13, 2007

Into the Panhandle ...

The strangest thing about going from Georgia into Florida was heading southwest into the Panhandle, and backtracking from Eastern to Central time zone. Add that to the time change this weekend, and none of us really knows what time it is where these days! We've booked into a campground with WiFi for a couple of nights, but discovered upon arrival that the signal didn't quite reach our site...

Live from the World of Coca-Cola ...

You couldn't miss the Smart Family Tour mobile studio right outside the front door of the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia! Thanks to all those who stopped by to say hello - please email us at radio@smartfamilyshow.com to let us know you were there and get entered to win a GPS, mp3 player, tech-enabled clothing and more. Many thanks to our special guest, Jacquie Wansley, from Coca-Cola, for sharing with us the history of the soft drink and company, and giving us a preview of what's to be expected at the NEW World of Coca-Cola that opens May 24th. You have until April 7th to check out all the great archival material at the current facility, before a lot of it goes into storage. And of course, you can always get more information at WorldOfCoca-Cola.com. Audio will be coming soon, as we re-build our new server...

The Pause That Refreshes

Today we had a wonderful tour of the OLD World of Coca-Cola, thanks to our guide, James. More about that on this week's broadcast, from right outside the front door of the museum. Come visit this Sunday from 9am-noon if you're in Atlanta! We discovered the Barnes & Noble here DOES NOT have free WiFi, but consoled ourselves with Starbucks. The store and cafe actually have separate WiFi offerings, neither of them free... (And Happy Birthday, Grandpa Clever!)

Soaking up Montgomery History...

We visited the Old Alabama Town, First White House of the Confederacy, and Troy University Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama today. We also crossed paths with the Nickelodeon Slime Truck, on its way to our home state. Entered Georgia in the evening and had to stop short of our destination campground because of a blown fuse that caused us to lose some nighttime running lights. Safety first, even if it means another Wal-Mart parking lot night...

Colonial History in Birmingham...

Who knew there was a replica colonial village just outside of Birmingham, Alabama? It's called the American Village in Montevallo, and includes guides dressed in period costumes. They even have replicas of the Liberty Bell and Oval Office... And although we're trying to avoid chain restaurants for dinner, it's okay when it's a new discovery that's something we can't get at home. Jim 'n' Nick's BBQ is just such a place. They need to get to California before we get home!

First Armadillo - and NOT in Texas!

Apparently they also live in Alabama, because we saw one by our camp site at night. By the way, Hidden Cove is a gorgeous spot - our site overlooked a lake and was very peaceful. However, "hidden" and "peaceful" to us translate into things like "no internet" and "no cell service"... We visited the McWane Science Center in Birmingham today, so we still got our daily dose of technology...

No Lack of Sun in AZ...

Strange to wake up in a parking lot... Happy to say the RV is pretty sound-proof, so even with other vehicles moving around us, we were able to get a decent late night and early morning sleep. We got a little bit later start than we wanted, simply because we forgot to change the time on all the clocks, but the sun streamed in and warmed the coach to the point that we needed the A/C... Discovered our first RV-related problem - a broken pipe under the bathroom sink.

Officially on the Road...

Finally on the road, and only 12 hours behind schedule. The grand plan called for a 6am departure, and we hit the road exactly at 6.... pm! Packing the entire lives of three people for several months is no easy task! Of course, our first stop had to be the local Starbucks... And our last dinner in California was at In-N-Out Burger. We crossed into Arizona at 11:40pm California time, which took us into the Mountain time zone at 12:40pm. After a late night of driving we pulled into Camping World in Mesa, AZ and drew the shades for the night.
